...thousands more still needed! Help!!
Barely a month after bringing to the public knowledge the need to donate to the fundraising for Abigail in Toronto to treat her cancer, an amount of $40,000.00 has been raised and paid to the hospital which is treating her. However, over $200,000.00 is still needed for the complete treatment of her cancer.
Abigail Bafowaah is a 24-year old international student from Ghana currently pursuing post-graduate studies in Human Resources Management at Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) at Vancouver in the British Columbia Province of Canada. After her first semester this year, Abigail came to Toronto to visit her aunt. She fell ill during her stay and was sent to the emergency in Etobicoke and numerous tests were run but there was nothing conclusive. Days after, she experienced excruciating pain again and was sent to the emergency and was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukaemia. Abigail was rushed to Princess Margaret Hospital for treatment. Further tests revealed that she had an aggressive form of cancer known as acute lymphocytic leukaemia. She needed around the clock treatment and series of chemotherapy.
The hospital estimated that it would cost $250,000.00 to complete all the treatments at Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto-Ontario and a deposit of $100,000 was required to continue with the treatment. The Ghanaian Canadian community through a local radio station known as Sankofa Radio on CMR 101.3 FM have been working with the aunt by setting up an online fund raising to help Abigail with the hospital cost. So far an amount to the tune of $40,000 has been raised! We thank God and Ghanaians in and outside Canada as well as all friends of the Ghanaian community in Canada who helped in realizing that amount.
Also, the parents of Abigail who live in Ghana on a meager income, managed to get loans from friends and the bank to the tune of $10,000.00 to complement the amount raised so far to $40,000.00 which has been paid to the Princess Margaret Hospital. We are still short of $210,000.00
It is noteworthy to mention here that Abigail had insurance up to the end of the first semester and was in the process of procuring insurance during the summer when this unfortunate incident occurred.
