40 Ivorian ex-combatants moved to Ankaful prisons

Police in the Western region say some forty Ivorian ex-combatants rounded up in a swoop a few days ago have been moved to the Ankaful Prisons.

The Police say the 40 are the same ex-combatants who escaped from being transported to the Ankaful Prisons last year.

It is however not clear if they are the ex-combatants mentioned by a UN report which claimed Ivorian militants in Ghana are planning to depose Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara.

Ivory Coast recently closed its side of the common border following a shooting incident at the Noe side of the divide.

Ivorian Authorities suspected the disturbances were part of a grand scheme between the Government of Ghana and the ex-combatants to overthrow President Ouattara.

The border was re-opened after two weeks following diplomatic talks between the two countries.

The ex-combatants flooded Ghana’s Western region following electoral conflicts between loyalists of deposed Ivorian Leader, Laurent Gbagbo and then opposition leader Alassane Ouattara.

The Police-Military swoop was aimed at restoring sanctity at the Ampain refugee camp which houses thousands of Ivorian refugees in Ghana.

The Public Relations Officer of the Western regional Police Command, ASP Olivia Adiku, speaking to XYZ News said the security services are keeping a close eye on the ex-combatants at the Ankaful security prison.

Meanwhile, the Ampain camp manager Keli Forson says a sense of security and calmness has been restored to the camp.
