A 38-year-old trader at Moshie-fong, a suburb of Walewawe in the North East Region, Zibrila Haruna, is in the grips of the police for allegedly impregnating a 15-year-old girl.

The victim, according to Sergeant Francis Ngissah, is a primary pupil at Walewawe.

According to him, the victim attends the same school with Zebrila Haruna’s daughter and occasionally passes by to wait for her for them to move together to school.

He said one particular day the victim came to the house and met the absence of her friend. It was then that Haruna grabbed the girl and forcibly had sex with her and warned the victim not to tell anybody.

Since then Haruna who is married with three children continued having sex with the victim until her mother discovered the girl was pregnant.

According to Sergeant Ngissah, the suspect is being processed for court. Checks by reveal such incident is rampant in the area and is hardly reported to the police due to the culture of the locals.

There are already fears the closedown of schools as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic will lead to a spike in incidents of teenage pregnancy across the country.
