37 Military Hospital Medical College takes off soon

Accra, April 11, GNA - The 37 Military Hospital would start the training of under- and post-graduate medical personnel soon, a statement from the Directorate of Public Relations of the Ghana Armed Forces said on Monday.

The statement signed by Colonel E.W.K. Nibo, Director of Public Relations, said the Hospital, which had excellent infrastructure and equipment would train under-graduates in the basic science and post-graduates in Surgery, Ear, Nose and Throat and Anaesthetics. The statement said this was made known when a two-member medical team headed by Lieutenant General (Mrs) Punita Arora, Commandant and Director of the Indian Armed Forces Medical College, presented its report to the Minister of Defence, Dr Kwame Addo Kufuor at Burma Camp.

The report recommended the take-off to be in phases while efforts were made to improve upon the human resource base and means were devised to attract senior qualified lecturers for the programme to be sustained.

It also recommended the provision of lecture halls, an administration block, a well-equipped library and lecturers' accommodation.

The statement said the delegation last Monday conducted studies and came up with proposals that could enable India to help the Government to upgrade the Hospital.

It was based on this that a committee was set up by the Defence Minister to study the infrastructure, equipment and human resource base at the Hospital with the view to upgrading it into a Teaching Hospital. The members of the committee included Brigadier Naresh Kumar, Deputy Director of the Armed Forces Medical College, Pune, India and Professor Adu Gyamfi of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital and President of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA).

The others were Prof. Jonathan Ardey of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital; Brigadier-General Daniel Twum, Director of Ghana Armed Forces Medical Services; Brigadier-General George Aryeetey, Commanding Officer of the 37 Military Hospital and an official of the Ministry of Defence.
