30-year-old man jailed for stealing GHc140,000.00

A 30-year-old man who stole GHc140,000.00 from his employer has been given a 10-year jail term by a Kumasi Circuit Court.

Gilbert Nsoh pleaded not guilty to the charge, but the Court found him culpable after trial.

Police Inspector Daniel Opoku told the Court presided over by Mr Emmanuel Amo-Yartey that the complainant, Zachari Awanono, is a cattle dealer and resides at Bremang near Suame whilst Nsoh lived at Ejisu Zongo.

He said in 2004, the complainant employed Nsoh as his personal secretary and accountant and was responsible for saving their daily sales at the Ecobank in Kumasi and redrawing monies to pay their customers from Burkina Faso, Togo, Mali and Ivory Coast.

Inspector Opoku said on February 13, this year, the complainant sent Nsoh to redraw an amount of Ghc80,000.00 to pay some customers as usual, but this time, he never reported back to his employer.

He said the complainant, who was getting anxious about the situation called Nsoh many times on his phone, but he did not answer, and when he later picked the phone, he lied to the complainant that he had suddenly taken ill and was on admission at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi.

Inspector Opoku said when the complainant rushed there, Nsoh was nowhere to be found, and his phone was switched off.

He said sensing danger, the complainant went to his bankers and based on his inquiries, the theft was uncovered.

Inspector Opoku said a report was made to the police and investigations revealed that Nsoh had gone into hiding, but was later arrested; in his caution statement, he admitted stealing part of the money and not the whole amount and with this he was put before the Court.
