240 fake voters exposed

The Dispatch reports on a two-page advert placed by the chairman of the Electoral Commission (EC), Dr Afari-Djan 11 days ago.

The advert headed 'Removal of Suspected Fraudulent Names >From Voters Register 2000', said the EC had reasons to suspect that 240 names on the Voters Register for the Ga District in the Greater Accra Region were probably fraudulent.

It challenged the 240 people to prove their identities within 30 days or have their names removed. According to the paper, as at the time of going to press, no one had shown up. It says credible sources close to the Greater Accra Regional office of the EC revealed that they had a tip-off from three people who had actually taken part in the fraudulent exercise.

It was followed up to the computer room where personnel working on the register were asked to check forms from New Achimota and it was realised that 240 of the forms had been shaded with pen instead of pencil.

Concerning the voters register, which the paper said was bloated by 1.5 million voters, the source explained that excess voters cannot be attributed to any particular political party.
