Ghana’s First Lady, Lordina Mahama, has rallied support for achieving gender equality as Ghana joins the rest of the world in marking International Women’s Day.

Observed annually on March 8, International Women’s Day commemorates women’s fight for equality and liberation, as well as the broader women’s rights movement. The day highlights issues such as gender equality, reproductive rights, and combating violence and abuse against women.

In her message to mark the occasion, the First Lady encouraged citizens to reflect on how they can contribute to advancing the rights and opportunities of women and girls across the country.

She urged individuals to mentor young women starting businesses, advocate equally for the education of daughters and sons, and support policies that promote equal opportunities in workplaces and communities.

“Will you mentor a young woman starting her own business? Will you advocate for your daughter’s education as passionately as you do for your son’s? Will you support policies that promote equal opportunities in your workplace and community? Always remember that investing in women brings benefits. When women succeed, families flourish, communities thrive, and the nation advances,” she said.

Drawing inspiration from an Akan proverb, “Se wo were fi na wosan kofa a yenkyiri”, meaning it is not wrong to return for something forgotten, she stressed the need to revisit efforts to uplift women and girls who may have been left behind.

She noted that supporting women in diverse sectors, including market women at Makola Market, young tech entrepreneurs in Accra, and shea butter producers in the Northern Region, would contribute to national development rather than diminish resources.

“Our mothers and grandmothers gave us rich traditions of communal support through nnoboa and susu. We must channel that same spirit toward achieving true gender equality,” she stated.
