2020 Elections: EC inaugurates Eminent Advisory Committee to enhance public engagements

The Electoral Commission (EC) has inaugurated a 21-member Eminent Advisory Committee to enhance engagement and interactions between it and the public for the 2020 general election.

The committee is chaired by a former Chairman of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), Justice Emile Short.

It is part of the EC’s new approach of maintaining an open-door policy that invites and responds to the concerns and interests of the citizens.

Speaking at the launch, Chairperson of the EC, Mrs Jean Mensa said the major rationale for its establishment is to demystify the Commission and prove its independence.

The committee, she said will serve as a window between the Commission and the public, stating that while the committee will serve to inform the public on the workings of the Commission, its members will also serve to pass on concerns from members of the public to the Commission.

Meanwhile, Former President Jerry John Rawlings has described the establishment of an Eminent Advisory Committee by the Electoral Commission as a wise decision that will help to remove the suspicions people have about the Commission.

The other members are Chairman of the National Peace Council, Most Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Asante, National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, Ameer of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community Maulvi Mohammed Bin Salih, Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church, Ghana, Rt. Rev Paul Boafo, a former Chief of Staff Nana Ato Dadzie, former member of the council of state Gifty Afenyi Dadzie and President of the National Charismatic Christian Churches Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams.

The rest are General Secretary of the Christian Council of Ghana, Rev Dr Cyril Fayose, President of the Ghana Bar Association, Tony Forson, Head of the Pentecostal Council Rev. Dr. Paul Frimpong-Manso, a former Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Most Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Martey, a Gender Advocate, Dr. Rose Mensah-Kutin, and President of the GJA, Roland Affail Monney.
