20 headmasters in Ashanti Region to be demoted

Twenty head teachers from the Ashanti Region are to be demoted for charging unapproved fees for candidates registering for this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

Already, nine head teachers in Accra have been demoted for the same offence.

The Ghana Education Service has approved a little more than GH¢50 for the registration out of which the government paid a subsidy of about GH¢33, with the remaining GH¢17 to be borne by parents.

But checks revealed that, most schools are charging in excess of GH¢150.

Deputy Minister in charge of Pre-tertiary Education, Alex Kyeremeh told Radio Ghana that, his Ministry will not condone any irregularity on the part of the head teachers.

Mr. Kyeremeh also called on School Management Committees to ensure that guidelines set out by the Ghana Education Service (GES) are duly followed when it comes to meting out punishment to pupils.

He was reacting to complaints of abuse of pupils by some teachers.

Two schools have been shut down across the country in the last fortnight following unrest, the second in the Northern Region following riots after a teacher ordered a girl to strip.
