20 Upgrade Skills In Tie And Die

Mampong (Ash), July 4, A five-day seminar on batik, tie and dye organised by the Business Advisory Centre (BAC) for more than 20 participants, has ended at Mampong. The seminar was organized in collaboration with the Rural Technology Service Centre (RTSC) and financed by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). It sought to introduce participants to diversified means of generating income. Participants were taken through topics like extraction of local dyes from tree barks and mixing of dyes. The head of BAC, Mr. Albert Boakye-Amofah in his closing address, stressed the need for diversified technology, saying that Mampong is saturated with carpenters, seamstresses and hairdressers. The situation, he noted, has contributed to the low income of these craftsmen. Mr. Francis D. Asare, head of RTSC, urged the participants to be self-supporting as envisaged in the government's Vision 2020 by using skills acquired through such seminars. Mr. Asare announced that the Rural Enterprise Project (REP) would soon set up a three million-cedi permanent batik, tie and dye unit at Mampong to train more people. The seminar was climaxed with exhibition of works produced by the participants.
