2 robbery gangs in Ashanti Region dismantled, 1 suspect killed

The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has intensified its fight against armed robbery after dismantling 2 robbery gangs in Krofrom and Mampong near Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.

Addressing the media in Bekwai on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, DCOP Joseph Hammond Nyaaba, the Ashanti South Regional Police Commander, said the first operation was conducted on March 26, 2026, under the supervision of the Regional Operations Commander.

During the operation, 27-year-old Muniru Ali was shot during an exchange with police officers while attempting to flee. He was transported to Bekwai Government Hospital but later died from his injuries. Preliminary investigations indicate that Ali had confessed to involvement in multiple robberies across the region.

“The first operation led to the death of Mounir Ali. During the operation, led by the Regional Operations Commander and supported by some senior officers and other ranks, the suspects, upon seeing the police, started firing at them whilst trying to escape.

“In their preliminary interrogation, the suspect, Mounir Ali, confessed to having been involved in a number of robberies,” DCOP Nyaaba stated.

According to the police, in a separate operation on March 28, 2026, a 28-year-old suspect, Osmanu Razak, a gang leader from Garu, was arrested at Mamponteng.

DCOP Nyaaba said the police have commenced investigations into both cases.

“The operations were intelligence-led and focused on targeting known criminal gangs in the area. We remain committed to ensuring the safety and security of residents across the Ashanti South Region,” DCOP Nyaaba stated.

“We have declared war on armed robbery and other violent crimes, and we will not rest until all criminals are brought to justice,” DCOP Nyaaba added.
