2 dead as police engage in a shootout with highway robbery gang

Two armed robbery suspects have reportedly lost their lives in a shootout with personnel of the Ghana Police Service at Atebubu, the capital town of the Atebubu-Amantin District in the Bono East Region.

The police, in a series of posts shared on the evening of Friday, August 1, 2025, indicated that its officers on patrol in an anti-robbery operation along the Atebubu highway chanced upon the suspects attacking some commuters on July 30, 2025.

It said that the robbers opened fire on the police team as they were drawing closer to the incident.

It added that the team returned fire, which hit the two suspects, who were pronounced dead on arrival after being rushed to the hospital.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that on 30th July 2025, a team of police officers on patrol duty came across a robbery attack on some commuters along the Atebubu highway.

“Upon sighting the police team, the suspects started firing towards the police. The police returned fire, leading to two of the suspects being fatally wounded. They were rushed to the hospital, where they were pronounced dead on arrival,” some of the posts read.

The police stated that the remaining robbery suspects managed to escape and are at large.

It also stated that it retrieved a short gun loaded with two live cartridges, four spent cartridges, and a machete from the scene of the incident.

The police further indicated that it is leaving no stone unturned as it works to “apprehend the remaining suspects.”
