Two women are in hot waters for allegedly dealing in fake local currency (cedi). They are in the hands of the Ashanti Regional Police Command.
The two suspects were identified by the police as 25-year-old Naomi Obeng and Akosua Nyarko, who reside at Agogo in the Ashanti Region.
The modus operandi of the duo, the police said, is that they use fake GHc20 notes to buy items and take genuine notes as change from unsuspecting people.
Akosua Nyarko, who is said to be the kingpin of the fraud, had mentioned one Addae as the supplier of the counterfeit notes but she had failed to lead the police to arrest him.
The two suspects would be processed before court soon, ACP Ampofo Duku, deputy Ashanti Regional police commander, said during a press briefing.
Narrating further, he said on July 21, 2015, Naomi Obeng was arrested by market women at Akomadan when she tried buying an item with a fake GHc20.
The suspect was handed over to the Akomadan police who upon a search, found GHc1,180.00 suspected to be fake notes, according to the police officer.
Upon interrogation, Naomi mentioned Akosua Nyarko as her supplier and led the police to arrest her at Agogo.
When a thorough search was conducted in Akosua Nyarko’s room, the police found a GH¢20 note in her lady’s purse, which she admitted ownership of.
