10 VEHICLES WITH OLD NUMBERS IMPOUNDED

Ten vehicles without the new registration numbers were at the weekend impounded by the Motor traffic Unit (MTU) in a special operation in Accra.

The operation was mounted by the MTU in conjunction with the Vehicle Examination and Licensing Division (VELD) of the Ministry of Roads and Transport.

Mr. Mustapha Garba, Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the MTU, told the "Times" in Accra yesterday that vehicles impounded included TRB 3385,GZ 9813,TRA 1455,AEB 8597,and ACE 5213. He said so far, about 90 per cent of vehicles in the country had been registered and that, those without the required numbers were not many in the system.

Mr. Garba appealed to the public to assist the unit by reporting cars which still possessed the old numbers and advised those yet to be registered to report to the VELD for the necessary guidance.

The Deputy Commissioner said the re-registration had a dual purpose and was also to ensure that the vehicles were in good condition.

On traffic congestion in the city, Mr. Garba said the current rehabilitation work on some of the roads in the city, coupled with road block was creating traffic jam and causing discomfort to both drivers and pedestrians.

He entreated motorists to exercise restraint when driving within the city and warned that road block should not be a license for reckless driving.

Mr. Garba warned that drivers who refused to obey signals would be charged for reckless driving.
