Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Shamima Muslim has described the adoption of a United Nations resolution on reparatory justice as a historic milestone.

In a post shared on her X page after the resolution was passed on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, she stated, "History has been made."

The United Nations General Assembly passed the resolution, which recognises the transatlantic slave trade as a grave crime against humanity and calls for renewed global efforts to address its enduring impact.

The resolution, championed by Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama, has been praised as a significant step toward acknowledging historical injustices and advancing reparatory justice for African nations and the descendants of enslaved people.

The resolution urges member states to engage in meaningful dialogue and take concrete steps toward reparations, including potential measures such as financial compensation, debt relief, development assistance, and the return of cultural artefacts taken during the colonial era.

Although the resolution does not establish a specific mechanism for reparations, it sets the stage for continued discussions among member states, African countries, and the African Union on how best to address historical injustices.
