Private legal practitioner, Martin Kpebu,a has questioned President John Dramani Mahama’s appointment of Emelia Afi Agbenyo to the Electoral Commission (EC), asking why the President is making decisions that, in his view, contradict the change he promised Ghanaians.

Kpebu said Mahama’s victory in the 2024 general election, by about 1.7 million votes, gave him an opportunity to pursue the reforms associated with his Reset agenda.

“You won the last election by about 1.7 million votes. So why are you getting it wrong?” Kpebu asked.

He described the appointment as a departure from the President’s promise to reset the country’s governance, arguing that the decision appeared inconsistent with Mahama’s earlier criticism of perceived partisanship in EC appointments.

“This one is the Reset in reverse,” he said on JoyNews, repeating the phrase to emphasise his disapproval of the appointment.

Kpebu also questioned the long-term implications of the decision for Mahama’s legacy, saying the President still had about two years in office at the time of his remarks and should avoid actions that undermine the change he promised.

“This is running the country in reverse,” he said, adding that the appointment was “not sustainable”.

He urged the President to reconsider his approach, arguing that Ghanaians expected a break from the practices he had criticised while in opposition.
