‘We will continue to demonstrate’ – NPP youth organiser to Mahama

The National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Abanga Fuseini Yakubu, has warned that the party's youth wing will continue to stage demonstrations if President John Dramani Mahama fails to address its concerns within 14 days.

Speaking at the NPP's ‘Yɛgye Yɛ Sika’ demonstration in Accra on November 3, 2026, Abanga said the protest would not be the last, regardless of whether the president responds to their demands.

“This is my first-ever demonstration. I promise that whether President Mahama listens to us or not, we will continue to demonstrate,” he said.

He also used the occasion to raise concerns about what he described as the economic difficulties facing Ghanaian youth, particularly the lack of employment opportunities and rising educational costs.

According to him, young people are struggling to secure jobs while facing increases in hostel and school fees.

He further questioned the government's ability to meet its obligations to lecturers, citing concerns over unpaid research allowances.

“Ghanaian youth need jobs. The prices of cocoa have been reduced, hostel fees have been increased, school fees have also increased, and the government cannot pay the research allowances of lecturers,” he added.

The NPP youth wing staged the demonstration to demand accountability from the government over expenditure on the evacuation of 1,964 Ghanaians from South Africa and concerns surrounding the issuance of diplomatic and service passports.

The protesters are demanding a detailed explanation of a reported GH¢16.4 million discrepancy in the expenditure on the evacuation exercise, which the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has put at approximately GH¢49.7 million.

They want the government to publish the original invoices, contracts and proof of payment for all charter flights used in bringing the Ghanaians home.

The group is also demanding the publication of details of diplomatic and service passports issued since January 2025, including the recipients and the authorities that approved them.

As part of its demands, they want President Mahama to remove Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa from office and ensure that the concerns raised are independently investigated.
