The University of Ghana Debate Society is set to fly the national flag at the 2027 World Universities Debate Championship (WUDC), scheduled to take place in Ottawa, Canada, from December 27, 2026, to January 4, 2027.
The UG Debate Society was crowned 2025 Pan-Africa Universities Debate Champion in December 2025 in South Africa, and that has earned the team the opportunity to represent Ghana on the international stage, bringing together some of the finest student debaters from around the world.
The achievement is a significant milestone for the University of Ghana Debate Society, highlighting the intellectual talent, confidence and communication skills of young Ghanaians.

Following their triumph at the African championship, the team has intensified preparations for the World Debate Championship in Canada. Training has focused on argument development, critical thinking, research, public speaking, rebuttal techniques and the ability to respond effectively to complex and contemporary issues.
Speaking on the team’s preparations, the Director of Sports & Wellness at the University of Ghana, Dr Austin Luguterah, expressed confidence in the team’s ability to compete strongly while representing the University and the nation with distinction.
“This is not only about representing the University of Ghana; the team will be carrying the hopes and aspirations of Ghana to Canada. We are therefore working with the team to ensure that they are well prepared, focused and ready to compete at the highest level,” the Director said.
The Director further noted that the team’s achievement in South Africa demonstrates the potential of Ghanaian students when given the right environment, opportunities and support to develop their talents.
The University of Ghana Debate Team’s journey from winning the African championship in South Africa to competing at the World Debate Championship in Canada has generated excitement within the University community.
The University community, alumni, partners and Ghanaians at large are encouraged to rally behind the team as it prepares to represent the country on the global stage.
