Director of Communications for the United Party, Solomon Owusu, has challenged critics of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) to present concrete solutions to address any challenges facing the institution instead of calling for its abandonment.

He said concerns about GoldBod should be brought forward for correction, arguing that the programme could be strengthened rather than scrapped.

“If there is anything going wrong, they should bring it on board for it to be corrected. Anybody with a progressive mind will call for GoldBod to be capitalised and not throw the baby out with the bathwater,” he said.

In a video shared on X and sighted by GhanaWeb on August 20, 2026, he questioned the suggestions being offered by critics of the institution, claiming that the discussions had focused largely on GoldBod’s Chief Executive Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, rather than the institution itself.

“What suggestion have they come out with or brought on board? None. The only thing is Sammy Gyamfi, Sammy Gyamfi, Sammy Gyamfi. Why? The attack is on the personality, not the institution,” he stated.

According to him, GoldBod has played an important role in efforts to stabilise the country’s currency and should therefore be supported to improve its operations.

Owusu also called for the institution to be given clear timelines to implement a system for tracing the source of gold purchased by GoldBod and its authorised buyers.

He said such a system would enhance transparency and accountability in the gold trade and allow stakeholders to assess whether the institution was meeting its commitments.

Owusu further argued that the government should consider capitalising GoldBod to strengthen its operations rather than abandoning the programme because of concerns raised about it.

He maintained that support for programmes that contribute to national development should be based on their potential to deliver results, while shortcomings should be identified and corrected.

His comments come amid ongoing criticism of GoldBod and its operations.
