Renowned broadcaster Paul Adom-Otchere has disclosed that he actively secured his appointment as Board Chairman of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) by directly lobbying former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Speaking on the matter, the veteran journalist revealed that his interest in the aviation sector prompted him to pitch his capabilities straight to the presidency.

According to a post on X by Citi FM on May 18, 2026, Adom-Otchere said his interest in airport administration grew during the COVID-19 pandemic after he had the opportunity to work at the airport.

“Yes, I did. I lobbied President Akufo-Addo for the job,” he said, acknowledging that he personally approached the former President for consideration.

He explained that his exposure to airport operations during the pandemic period gave him a deeper appreciation of the sector and motivated his decision to seek a leadership position at the company.

“During Covid, I had an opportunity to work at the airport, and it was there that I developed an interest in the operations of the airport,” he noted.

Adom-Otchere said the opening became available after the then Board Chairman left for an appointment at the presidency, creating an opportunity he felt compelled to pursue.

“The then Board Chairman was given an appointment at the presidency, so I went to the former President and told him to look at the possibility for me. He smiled and said he would think about it,” he recounted.

He added that he eventually secured the appointment and found the experience fulfilling.

“That was how I got the position. I enjoyed every bit of it,” he said.

His tenure at the Airports Company later drew public attention following controversy surrounding the “Christmas tree saga” at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA), which triggered debate over public spending on festive decorations and allegations of financial impropriety.

The matter was later investigated by the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice, which cleared the Airports Company of wrongdoing.
