The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has disclosed that although more than 105,000 young people have qualified to proceed to the medical stage of the ongoing recruitment into Ghana’s security services, only 5,000 slots are currently available.

Speaking to journalists on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, after proceedings in the Parliament of Ghana, the minister explained that the high number of successful candidates followed the online aptitude tests conducted during the recruitment process.

According to him, while thousands of applicants may eventually pass the medical screening, the limited number of vacancies means that only a small portion of them will be enlisted into the country’s various security agencies this year.

“We still have 105,000 who have qualified for medicals. In reality, the total number we can take after medicals is 5,000, so we still face a huge challenge,” he said.

Mohammed-Mubarak acknowledged the disappointment many applicants may feel if they are not selected. However, he urged them to remain hopeful, explaining that the government plans to keep their details for future recruitment exercises.

He added that another round of recruitment is expected in 2026, particularly after Ghana concludes its programme with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

“But the President has instructed that those who qualify and pass medicals, let’s keep their data. This is the first phase. The current recruitment is for 2025. Hopefully, when we are out of the IMF programme, we will conduct the 2026 recruitment and draw from the same pool of applicants,” he assured.

The Interior Minister noted that the government remains focused on creating more opportunities for young people and intends to recruit more qualified applicants into the security services once the country’s financial situation improves.
