Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Bernard Bediako, has questioned the election of Kojo Fosu Boadu, popularly known as Kojo Bamba, as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) First Vice Chairman.
According to the MP, the NPP should not have allowed Kojo Bamba to contest the position because he is a convicted person.
From Vigilantism to Vice Chairman of NPP: The political rise of Kojo Bamba
Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana on October 6, 2026, he said he was surprised that Kojo Bamba was able to pass the party’s vetting process despite the provision in the NPP Constitution on people who have been convicted of certain offences.
“Now, when you come to the vice-chair and then all that, of course we were all surprised, but it's a very interesting one. The first vice-chair is Boadu, and it's been said, and I'm so shocked how NPP got it wrong because if you read Article 3 of the Constitution, it talks about eligibility to hold an office within their party, and it escaped the NPP that this is a convict,” he said.
Bernard Bediako referred to Article 3(C)(iii) of the NPP Constitution, which he said prevents members convicted of certain offences from holding positions or contesting elections within the party.
He said the rule applies to people convicted of offences involving high treason, state security, dishonesty, fraud or moral turpitude, unless 10 years have passed since the person served the sentence or the person has received a full pardon.
“Did it escape them that the said gentleman is a convict? What?... Article 3(C) (iii) of the NPP constitution says a member shall have the right to contest for any position or office within the party in accordance with rules and regulations governing elections,” he argued.
“A member shall be disqualified from holding any office or contesting any election in the party if he or she has been convicted and/or sentenced by a court of competent jurisdiction in respect of any offense involving high treason, an offense involving the security of the state, dishonesty, fraud, or moral turpitude, unless a period of 10 years has elapsed serving of the sentence or he or she has been granted a full pardon,” he added.
The Akwatia MP insisted that the NPP should have considered the provision before allowing Kojo Bamba to contest.
“I’m so shocked that it is not up to 10 years that this gentleman could pass vetting… but you know very well that you [NPP] goofed,” he said.
Bediako’s comment follows a 2017 incident involving 13 members of the Delta Force vigilante group linked to the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), including Kojo Bamba, who escaped from the Kumasi Circuit Court.

The 13 were later fined a total of GH₵31,200 after they pleaded guilty to the offence of escaping from lawful custody.
Before their escape, the 13 faced charges of a conspiracy to commit crime, assault on a public officer, causing unlawful damage and preventing a public officer from performing his lawful duties.
