Political analyst Keskine Owusu Poku has alleged that President John Dramani Mahama is unlikely to assent to the anti-LGBTQ+ bill, arguing that recent developments indicate a lack of commitment to the legislation.
Speaking on the ongoing debate surrounding the bill, Dr Owusu Poku claimed that the current version does not reflect the expectations of religious leaders and sections of the Ghanaian public who supported the original proposal.
“The current bill does not satisfy the agreement they had with the clergy, Imams and the nation,” he stated.
According to him, amendments and changes made to the legislation have significantly altered its original intent and provisions.
Dr Owusu Poku further argued that the President’s approach suggests reluctance to proceed with the bill.
“Everything shows that Mahama is not ready and will never sign the bill,” he claimed.
The political analyst alleged that the explanations being offered regarding the bill’s status amount to attempts to avoid granting assent.
“Mahama is not ready to sign the bill; he is just giving excuses as to why he should not sign it,” he said.
He also contended that religious leaders who strongly advocated for the legislation may feel disappointed by the current development.
"They have deceived the clergy, Imams and the entire nation," he alleged.
