President John Dramani Mahama has shared the inspiration behind why he wears locally made garments to work.

Speaking during a media interview on Friday, February 6, 2026, he indicated that his choice of attire is to promote the Ghanaian local garment industry, which he further highlighted as one of the achievements of his presidency.

President Mahama disclosed that the local attires he is often captured wearing during official visits and at work are all made by Ghanaian designers.

“One of the things that I have brought into my presidency is to promote the local garment industry and so all my clothes are made in Ghana. They are sewn by Ghanaian designers.

“So, all these safari suits and things I wear are sewn by local designers and that's what I wear every day to work and to official functions,” the president stated.

His comments follow an online debate among Ghanaians and Zambians after the president wore a traditional smock during his visit to the southern African country.

Mahama was photographed wearing a traditional African smock, commonly associated with northern Ghana, paired with blue/black jeans and black shoes as Zambian officials received him.

After images of the president’s official welcome circulated online, some Zambian social media users, unfamiliar with the attire, took to various platforms to mock the outfit, referring to it as a blouse.

However, many Ghanaians responded to the comments, defending the President and the cultural significance of the attire, which sparked heated exchanges between netizens from both countries.
