Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has provided an update on the redevelopment of the La General Hospital.

According to him, the project is expected to be completed by the end of 2027, with commissioning scheduled for January 2028.

He made this known during a visit to the project site on October 29, 2026, where he acknowledged progress but urged contractors to speed up work to meet the deadline.

"...For the completion date, we are looking at by end of 2027 then in the first quarter of 2028 by January, we should commission it", he noted.

Akandoh said there had been significant improvement since his last visit but stressed that the pace of construction could be better.

“We all attest to the fact that there has been massive progress since we left here the last time,” he said.

The minister said the hospital serves a large catchment area, adding that residents were facing difficulties because the facility had not yet been completed.

On concerns about delays in payments to contractors, Akandoh said the government was doing its best to meet its payment obligations.

He explained that the contractors had submitted their latest interim payment certificates (IPCs), which had been processed and forwarded to the Ministry of Finance.

“They cannot cite delay of payment as an excuse for any suspension or any delay,” he said.

Akandoh said the government would continue visiting the site to monitor progress until the hospital was completed and officially commissioned.

He urged the contractors to accelerate construction to ensure the project meets its expected completion date.

“We can speed up to beat the deadline,” he added.

The hospital was closed down for redevelopment in 2020.The move became necessary due to the dilapidated nature of existing facilities which made it unsafe for both staff and patients.

When completed, the hospital will have an ultra-modern Outpatients Department (OPD) and a well-equipped emergency unit and public health department.

It will also have a surgical block with four fully equipped theatres and a maternity unit, in-patient wards for both male and female, medical and surgical wards as well as a children’s ward and a fully installed physiotherapy department.
