Traders at Kejetia Market in Kumasi have reportedly clashed with a task force from the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) during a decongestion exercise.

What was meant to restore order quickly turned chaotic, with traders resisting attempts to remove those operating outside designated spaces.

According to a report on myjoyonline.com, on April 2, 2026, the situation at Kejetia had been building up for months.

The Federation of Kumasi Traders has repeatedly warned about overcrowding, revealing that the facility now hosts more than 3,300 traders beyond its intended capacity.

Alongside the congestion, concerns have also been raised about structural defects, with fears that the market could become a “death trap” if urgent action is not taken.

City authorities have argued that clearing unauthorised traders will improve safety, ease movement, and restore sanity within the busy trading hub.

But on the ground, many traders unwilling to give up their spaces continue to resist eviction, turning what is meant to be a regulatory exercise into a tense standoff between authorities and those trying to earn a living.
