Ranking Member on Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, Samuel Abu Jinapor, has criticised the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, over comments regarding Ghana’s new Chancery in Addis Ababa.

In a Facebook post on February 19, 2026, Jinapor stated that the current administration cannot take full credit for Ghana’s new Chancery in Addis Ababa.

He explained that the construction of the chancery began with a sod-cutting ceremony performed by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on February 10, 2020, on the sidelines of the African Union Summit in Addis Ababa.

“Construction of the Addis Ababa Chancery commenced with a sod cutting ceremony by President Akufo-Addo on 10 February 2020 on the sidelines of the AU Summit. The ceremony was witnessed by the then President of Ethiopia, H E Sahle-Work Zewde, and other senior government officials from both Ethiopia and Ghana. I was present at this ceremony,” he stated.

The ceremony, he said, was witnessed by Ethiopia’s then President Sahle-Work Zewde and other senior officials from both countries.

According to Jinapor, the former President at the time lamented Ghana’s lack of a permanent chancery in Addis Ababa, despite longstanding ties between the two nations dating back to the Kwame Nkrumah and Haile Selassie era.

He rejected claims that the project had a ten-year history dating back to 2016.

He stated that physical construction commenced in February 2020 immediately after the sod-cutting ceremony and by October 2024, the project was about 90 per cent complete.

“The suggestion that the Project has a ten-year history from 2016 is, therefore, misleading and inaccurate. Construction of the Project commenced in February 2020 immediately after the sod-cutting ceremony, and by October 2024, was about 90% complete,” he indicated.

Jinapor claimed that there was a delay in the final payment of the contract sum due to the 2024 general elections.

He therefore argued that the current administration can only take credit for completing the remaining 10 per cent of the project.

He stressed that the Addis Ababa Chancery is a project initiated under the Akufo-Addo administration and completed under the present government.

“This is a national project commenced by the previous government and completed by the current Government. It is neither partisan nor improper to acknowledge continuity in governance. Indeed, it reflects maturity in democratic practice,” he said.

Jinapor further urged Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, as the country’s chief diplomat, to recognise what he described as the ‘unimpeachable facts’ surrounding the project’s timeline and execution.
