Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia emerged victorious in the January 31, 2026, New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primaries, which gives him a second chance at leading the party into another national election.

Dr Bawumia secured victory with nearly 57% of votes from the over 200,000 delegates of the NPP who cast their votes, with his closest challenger, Kennedy Agyapong, the former Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin Central, securing about 24% of the votes.

Aside from the contenders, the results of the primaries have made and unmade certain individuals and entities who hung their credibility on the elections.

In this article, GhanaWeb looks at the list of winners and losers in the NPP primaries, starting with the biggest winners.

LIVESTREAMED: Dr Bawumia declared NPP flagbearer for 2028 general elections

The Biggest Winners:

Mussa Dankwah:

The person who, perhaps, enjoyed the results of the primaries better than the new NPP flagbearer is Mussa Dankwah, the Executive Director of Global Info Analytics, who has added another feather in the cup of his proven track-records of successfully projecting election results in the country.

Before the election, Mussa Dankwah put his credibility on the line, consistently predicting that Dr Bawumia was going to win the primaries.

His last poll predicted that Dr Bawumia was going to win the primaries with 57% of the votes from delegates, with Kennedy Agyapong coming second with 28%, followed by Abetifi MP Bryan Acheampong with 13%, and Bosomtwe MP Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum with 2%.

In the actual results announced by the Electoral Commission after the close of polls on January 31, Dr Bawumia garnered 110,645 votes, representing 56.48%.

His closest contender, former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, obtained 46,554 votes (23.76%).

Dr Bryan Acheampong followed with 36,303 votes (18.53%), while Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum received 1,999 votes (1.02%). Kwabena Agyapong secured 402 votes, representing 0.21%.

Dr Bryan Acheampong:

Another person who will also be most likely very pleased with the outcome of the NPP primaries is Bryan Acheampong, who came in third in the race.

The votes secured by the Abetifi legislator and former Minister of Food and Agriculture surprised political analysts.

Bryan, with the nearly 19% of votes he secured, outperformed almost every other prediction, including the 13% predicted by Mussa Dankwah.

Several analysts, including Michael Ebo Amoah, have stated that Bryan has made himself a force to be reckoned with through his performance in his maiden flagbearership election.

Prophet Nigel Gaisie:

Another person who would have something to be happy about after the NPP primaries is the Founder and Leader of the Prophetic Hill Chapel, Prophet Nigel Gaisie.

Nigel, too, put his credibility on the line by consistently predicting that Bawumia would win the NPP primaries, adding that Kennedy Agyapong had no chance in the contest.

He intimated that even though Ken was originally the person to win the primaries, the “prayers” and “lamentations” of some men of God led to Bawumia snatching victory.

He even said that Ken would not get 30% of the votes from delegates, which eventually happened.

Prophet Eric Boahen Uche:

A spiritual protégé of Prophet Owusu Bempah and renowned seer, Prophet Eric Boahen, popularly referred to in prophetic circles as Uche, also declared that Dr Mahamudu Bawumia would emerge victorious in the New Patriotic Party’s presidential flagbearership elections.

The prophecy was delivered during Prophet Eric Boahen’s December 31 all-night service, which ushered members of his congregation into the New Year, 2026.

According to him, it was puzzling that some prophets continued to name other contestants as potential winners, raising questions about the source of such revelations.

He maintained that the outcome of the contest had already been divinely settled, stressing that Dr Mahamudu Bawumia was already “in the seat” and that no prophecy or human intervention could change what God had ordained.

He even prophesied that Bawumia was going to win the primaries with between 55% and 56% of the votes from the delegates.

The Big Losers:

Kennedy Agyapong:

The biggest loser in the NPP primaries is, perhaps, Kennedy Agyapong, who came in second in the election.

Kennedy Agyapong, who was contesting in the NPP presidential primaries for a second time, performed worse than in his first attempt.

The former Assin Central legislator secured about 24% of the votes in the primaries, representing a drop of about 14 percentage points from the 37% he obtained in 2023.

Also, Kennedy Agyapong’s utterances in the run-up to the primaries, including his description of Dr Bawumia as a “liar,” which was criticised by a number of political analysts, could affect any key role he can play in the party’s campaign ahead of the 2028 Election, even though he has since conceded defeat.

Prophet Bernard ElBernard Nelson-Eshun:

The General Overseer of Spiritlife Revival Ministries, Prophet Bernard ElBernard Nelson-Eshun, is probably the second biggest loser in the NPP primaries.

The prophet, who is known for accurately predicting several events in Ghana, including the 2024 Election victory of President John Dramani Mahama and his number eight ballot paper position, is one of the prophets who put his credibility on the line regarding this race.

Prophet ElBernard Nelson-Eshun, who appeared to have been on a ‘one-man commando’ mission, consistently prophesied that Kennedy Agyapong would win the NPP primaries.

According to him, God revealed to him on eight different occasions that Ken Agyapong would emerge victorious after the primaries.

He even wrote a book about the revelations he received regarding the former Assin Central legislator’s victory.

He has since apologised for getting his prophecy wrong.
