The Member of Parliament for Effiduase-Asokore in the Ashanti Region, Dr Nana Ayew Afriye, has criticised the government over what he describes as worsening economic conditions, joblessness and challenges in the cocoa sector.

In a Facebook post on April 12, 2026, the Ranking Member of Parliament’s Health Committee accused the government of failing cocoa farmers, citing delays in payments and what he called an ‘insensitive reduction in cocoa prices.’

His comments come as part of engagement in his constituency during Easter recess.

He also raised concerns about unemployment among trained professionals, particularly teachers and nursing trainees.

“The insensitive reduction in cocoa prices and the government’s inability to pay the cocoa farmers are worrying,” he stated.

Dr Afriye further lamented delays in salary payments for some teachers recruited in 2024.

“Teachers who were employed in 2024 have not been paid to date,” he alleged.

He also criticised rising utility costs and fees, describing them as burdensome on households.

“High electricity bills and the increase in BECE fees for JHS candidates are adding to the hardship of ordinary Ghanaians,” he said.

Dr Afriye described some government flagship programmes as ineffective, referring to what he labelled as the ‘24-hour economy scam’ and the ‘job 1:3:3 scam.’

“The inability to create jobs has left teacher trainees and nursing trainees at home after graduation without employment,” he indicated.

Dr Afriye also raised concerns about illegal mining, which he said continues to worsen across the country.

He donated assorted items to communities, including 300 Wellington boots, 100 hair dryers, 100 sewing machines, 100 spraying machines, and 200 bags of cement to support community-led development projects.

Dr Afriye also used the tour to call for unity and reconciliation within his party, urging members to support internal reorganisation efforts ahead of the 2028 elections.

He further encouraged support for the party’s leadership and its presidential candidate to advance its development agenda.
