Renowned Ghanaian visual artist Ibrahim Mahama has clarified that his quest for justice over the alleged assault by police officers is not to seek financial compensation.

Speaking to the media after a meeting with the Police Management Board (POMAB) on Thursday, March 26, 2026, he stated that he was seeking to ensure accountability.

“No, we are not looking for compensation. There is no way we are looking for money. Obviously, I don’t need that. It’s not about that. It’s more just about justice.

“We just want to make sure people understand what transpired that day. Because we are all in the country, we are in a democracy. We want to understand what is happening and see how we can solve it,” he stated.

Mahama further noted that pursuing justice in such cases is essential to strengthening public confidence in the country’s institutions.

“So that when other people are elsewhere, and things like this happen, at least they are assured that in the country they live in, their matter will be taken seriously and there will be some kind of justice,” he said.

The alleged incident is reported to have occurred on March 21, 2026, and is said to have involved a group believed to be part of the Inspector-General of Police’s Special Operations Team, commonly referred to as the ‘Black Maria’.

However, the team, led by Abdul Bawa Jalil, has denied any involvement in the alleged assault, insisting that its personnel were not engaged in the incident.

In response to the allegations, the matter has been referred to the Police Professional Standards Bureau, the internal body responsible for investigating misconduct within the Ghana Police Service.
