The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, has commissioned a shelter for survivors of domestic violence as part of government’s commitment to strengthening protection and support systems for victims of abuse across the country.

The Minister, joined by the Chairperson of the Domestic Violence Board, Dr. Miriam Iddrisu, and a representative from UNICEF, described the facility as a symbol of safety, dignity, hope, and restoration for survivors of abuse.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey noted that domestic violence and gender-based violence continue to affect women, children, and vulnerable persons, leaving many survivors with physical injuries, emotional trauma, and long-term psychosocial effects.

She stated that despite several interventions implemented by government, including the Domestic Violence Act, the establishment of the Domestic Violence Secretariat, and DOVVSU, access to safe shelters for survivors remains limited.

According to the Minister, the commissioning of the facility forms part of broader initiatives by the administration of President John Dramani Mahama to enhance shelter and protection services nationwide.

This effort aims to ensure that survivors receive the care, protection, and psychosocial support needed to rebuild their lives.

She emphasised that shelters play a critical role in providing temporary refuge, counselling, legal aid, medical care, and rehabilitation services for survivors.

The Minister further reaffirmed government’s commitment to preventing domestic violence, protecting survivors, and strengthening rehabilitation and reintegration systems nationwide.

Representatives from the Domestic Violence Management Board and UNICEF commended the Ministry for the initiative and called for strengthened prevention efforts, public education, and effective operational systems to ensure the sustainability of the shelter.
