Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi has called on delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to prioritise his competence and grassroots connection over his proficiency in the ‘Queen’s Language’.
Addressing party executives in the Western Region on March 5, 2026, the three-time Ashanti Regional Chairman pointed to the 2028 general election as a test that demands experienced and battle-ready leadership.
“This election is not for the books, it is for those who are tried and tested as grassroots working men, people who are popular and ready to work tirelessly for victory,” he said.
According to a report by thechronicle.com.gh on March 5, 2026, Wontumi emphasised that the NPP’s current situation requires a national chairman capable of restoring hope and guiding the party to reclaim power following its 2024 electoral defeat.
“Don’t judge me based on my certificate, but on my competency,” he stressed.

Projecting himself as a leader focused on action rather than titles, Wontumi said he intends to work directly in constituencies to mobilise voters.
“As National Chairman, my work will be in the constituencies. The General Secretary will manage affairs at the headquarters, but my focus will be on the ground, mobilising every possible vote for victory in 2028,” he noted.
Citing his extensive service record, from a two-term constituency chairman to a three-term Ashanti Regional Chairman, Wontumi said he is prepared to lead the party with strategies that strengthen its electoral appeal ahead of 2028.
He also reaffirmed his commitment to supporting Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s presidential bid.
Western Regional Chairman Nana Francis Ndede Siah described Wontumi as a true grassroots politician deserving of strong support.
He pledged his personal backing and resources to the Ashanti leader’s bid for national chairmanship.
