Media personality, Captain Smart, has warned that corruption must not be treated merely as the stealing of public funds, stressing that every amount taken from the public purse has a direct impact on the lives and future of citizens.

Speaking during an interview on the KSM Show, sighted by GhanaWeb on August 10, 2026, Captain Smart said monies lost through corruption could have been used to provide essential infrastructure and opportunities for Ghanaians.

“Every amount stolen from the public purse represents a hospital that may never be built, a school without adequate facilities, a community without clean water, a young person without employment, and a family trapped in poverty,” he indicated.

According to him, the impact of corruption goes beyond the financial loss to the state and must be assessed based on how it affects people in their daily lives.

He said corruption deliberately destroys people's opportunities, dignity and future, and therefore requires a more serious national response.

“When you see corruption this way, as a president, as a minister, as a member of parliament, as a DCE, that you see that it is the deliberate destruction of the people's opportunity, their dignity and the future, you will sit and deal with it properly,” Captain Smart stated.

He called on African leaders to treat the fight against corruption as a national security issue, arguing that the practice affects the integrity of countries and their leaders.

Captain Smart further urged Ghanaians and Africans to move away from a political culture where individuals expect financial rewards from politicians seeking political power.

He said citizens must instead recognise that public resources are meant to protect their future and support national development.

According to him, corruption persists partly because resources meant for development are diverted into private hands, often through relationships between politicians and contractors.

He therefore called for greater public consciousness and decisive action to prevent corruption from undermining Africa's development.
