Bawumia's growing popularity is about competence, not tribe – Abu Jinapor

The Member of Parliament for Damongo and former Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor , says the growing support and popularity being enjoyed by former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia across the country is driven by competence, not tribal considerations.

Addressing New Patriotic Party (NPP) delegates in Damongo while canvassing votes for Dr Bawumia ahead of the party’s January 31, 2026, presidential flagbearership contest, Abu Jinapor stated that the former Vice President’s appeal is rooted in his capability, credibility and electability rather than regional or ethnic identity.

According to him, tribe, religion and cultural background have never been decisive factors within the NPP, stressing that the party has consistently rallied behind candidates based on merit and performance.

“We do not support Dr Bawumia because he comes from the north, the south, the east or the west. That is totally inconsequential; it does not count and it does not matter,” he said.

He added that the party’s history demonstrates unity across regional and cultural lines.

“In the NPP, since time immemorial, northerners have supported southerners and southerners have supported northerners. Where you come from, which God you believe in, whether you eat tuo zaafi or fufu, does not matter,” he noted.

The former Lands Minister described Dr Bawumia as capable, competent and formidable, insisting that he remains the NPP’s best bet to secure victory in the 2028 general elections.

He urged delegates to vote massively for the former Vice President, assuring them that if Dr Bawumia emerges as flagbearer and is subsequently elected President, he would govern Ghana with commitment, fairness and a strong sense of national duty.

With nearly 42 days to go before the flagbearership contest, the NPP race has entered its final stretch, with campaigns intensifying across the country.

As the contest sharpens, party insiders say it is becoming increasingly evident that Dr Bawumia is steadily emerging as a leading choice among delegates ahead of the decisive January contest.
