A Ghanaian evacuee, Godwin Anokye, has expressed shock over the outcome of the press conference held to address concerns bothering on recent evacuations from South Africa.

He indicated that he was surprised to discover that a trip to Accra, centred on the fact that the Ministry wanted to confirm that he had indeed received the widely publicised allowance of GH¢ 5,500 package, instead of additional funds to help improve their livelihood.

According to a report by adomonline.com on October 27, 2026, Anokye said his expectation was based on assurances previously given to the returnees about assistance to help them rebuild their lives in Ghana.

“Upon arrival, we came to realise that it was a press conference for us to testify that indeed we received the support package from the government,” Anokye, who travelled from Akropong to Accra after receiving a phone call said.

Anokye confirmed that he received GH¢5,000 after returning to Ghana as part of the government's support package.

He also disclosed that he received GH¢500 for transportation after Monday's press conference.

'Some of us have been coached to speak against government' – SA returnee claims

Despite his experience, he commended the government for facilitating their evacuation from South Africa, insisting that he appreciated the intervention even if no financial assistance had been provided.

“I expressed gratitude to the government for even the intention to evacuate us, even if they hadn’t given us anything,” he stated.

He further listed items provided to the returnees at the airport, including bags of rice, cooking oil, clothing, cups, blankets and three bars of soap, in addition to food.

The invitation came amid public debate over claims that some Ghanaians evacuated from South Africa had not received the support package announced by the government.

Reports from some returnees have differed over the assistance received following their arrival in Ghana.
