A Plus defends role in NSS 'ghost names' scandal

Kwame Asare Obeng is the Gomoa Central MP

The Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central, Kwame Asare Obeng, has addressed allegations that he was paid by former executives of the National Service Authority (NSA) to influence media coverage of the ongoing NSS payroll scandal in November 2024.

Speaking on the matter in an interview with KSM on December 16, 2025, A Plus defended his actions, saying that his involvement was about ensuring all parties had an opportunity to be heard.

Former NSA director paid an MP to 'kill' NSA ghost scandal story - Attorney General

“I think that I did the right thing. There was a court that placed an injunction on the report that the Fourth Estate wanted to air and so the guys came and said that they also have to be heard and I think that everybody deserves to be heard,” he said.

A Plus emphasised that organising a platform for people to present their side of a story in a matter is not unusual, especially when court injunctions limit what the media can report.

Commenting on the payment allegations, he noted that the sum paid for arranging a press conference seemed small compared to the scale of the issues at hand.

“… It is just okay to let people tell their side of the story; there is nothing wrong with it. Later, when all the allegations we have heard about came out, it made me feel like the money that they paid for their press conference was small. If I had heard about all of this, then it means that they have to give me plenty money.

“… The focus is I have an issue; I have a side of a story to tell… I can arrange for you to tell your side of the story. I can organise a press conference for you, bring the media together for you, bring the bloggers to tell your side of the story because if you go to court today, the judge will ask your side of the story and your side of the story must be told. I don't move my car from my house to go around helping people to tell their stories for free.”

A Plus insisted that he will not hesitate to provide a platform to the executives who are facing prosecution, should they want to tell their side of the story and are willing to pay for his services.

“Even now, now that they are going to court up and down, if they have a side of a story they want to tell and they think that I can be of help, they should bring money, I will just arrange for [them to tell] their side of the story,” he added.

It will be recalled that in March 2025, the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr Dominic Ayine, disclosed that the former Director-General of the National Service Authority (NSA), Osei Assibey Antwi, paid an MP to prevent media coverage of the ghost names scandal.

Addressing a press conference on Monday, March 24, 2025, he explained that eight other suspects who are linked to the NSA had been questioned.

“These matters are still under investigation; I can confirm that the investigation will conclude in the National Service and the Sky Train Scandal by the middle of April for the prosecution to begin.

Pressure mounts on AG to name MP paid by former NSS boss to kill 'ghost names' scandal

“With the National Service Scandal, eight suspects have been interrogated and a good number of them have started singing. We now have evidence of payments that were made into the accounts of the top executives of the National Service by private vendors of the scheme. We also have evidence that in November 2024, the CEO of the NSS and others paid a Ghanaian Member of Parliament to kill the story in the media and to defend them,” he stated.
