34 arrested over deadly Funsi chieftaincy clash

The Upper West Regional Police Command has arrested thirty-four (34) suspects in connection with a deadly shooting incident linked to the ongoing chieftaincy dispute in Funsi in the Wa East District, which claimed the lives of three young men.

According to a police statement dated May 24, 2026, officers retrieved one shotgun, bow and arrows, gunpowder, spent cartridges, talisman-embedded smocks, and a medallion believed to be central to the chieftaincy tensions between the rival gates.

All suspects and exhibits have since been conveyed to Wa to assist with further investigations.

The Command explained that on the night of May 22, 2026, the Funsi Police received information that two persons had been shot and killed at the Gbelonosi section of Funsi.

“Police officers who proceeded to the scene confirmed the deaths of 37-year-old Fufulu Nandugu and 22-year-old Yussif Samahan,” the statement indicated.

During subsequent police operations and investigations, a third victim, identified as 20-year-old Amadu Lukman, was also found dead in the community.

The Regional Police Commander for the Upper West Region, Francis Yiribaare, led a reinforcement team to the affected community to support ongoing investigations and help maintain law and order.

“The Police Administration extends its deepest condolences to the bereaved families and assures the public of its commitment to bringing all persons responsible for the disturbance to justice,” the statement said.

The Regional Police Command also appealed to residents and stakeholders to remain calm, avoid reprisals, and cooperate with the police by providing credible information to support investigations.

Meanwhile, intensified patrols and other security measures have been deployed within the community to maintain peace and security.
