A High Court Judge, Justice Ernest Yao Obimpe was last Friday elected as the president of the Ghana Tennis Federation (GTF) after he polled nine out of 17 votes in a keenly contested election at the Accra Sports Stadium. His only opponent for the top job in Ghanaian tennis, John Ashford Afful Jnr, the Chairman of the Eastern Regional Tennis Association polled eight votes at the second congress of the federation.
Justice Obimpe,55, takes over from Enoch Amartey who along with Hajia Zenabu Akotoh, another aspirant for the presidency pulled out of the race at the eleventh hour to avoid a conflict of interest situation because of their roles as members of the National Sports Authority board. The congress also voted Isaac Aboagye Duah as the federation's new vice president, after he polled nine votes to pip incumbent Kobby Brew who had a vote less.
Seven individuals namely; Michael Akpabla, Ebenezer Grant, Patrick Kwame Djangba, Prempeh Bannerman, David Churcher, Christine Osae and Peter Annang alias Grandmaster were also appointed as Executive Members of the federation.
Justice Obimpe who will serve a four-year term thanked the delegates for the honour, pledging to restore the nation to the height of the Davis Cup competition.
