Maritzburg send Adjei away

South African side, Maritzburg United, boss Farouk Kadodia confirms to KickOff.com that the team has turned down an opportunity to sign Ghanaian international keeper Sammy Adjei, but the latter says a deal is still on the cards.

“He was on trial with us and left a couple of days ago. We couldn’t sign him because he had some personal issues,” says the Maritzburg chairman.

Kadodia couldn’t divulge what sort of problem stood between a possible deal between the two parties.

However, Adjei reveals the ‘personal issues’ Kadodia is referring to has to do with his clearance.

“I was playing for Hearts of Oak for the past few months since I returned from Israel, where I used to play for FC Ashdod. So Hearts of Oak are the people who can give me my clearance to complete a deal with Maritzburg United.

“The problem is that Hearts of Oak are entitled to 20 percent of the transfer fee and I think Maritzburg thought I was going to sign as a free agent,” Adjei tells KickOff.com from Ghana.

“I decided to leave Maritzburg to come back home so I can talk to Hearts of Oak and hopefully fix the problem. If we can fix it, then I might come back to sign for Maritzburg United. It is not like there can’t be a deal with Maritzburg United. Something can still happen as long as I get my clearance,” Adjei says.

The 28-year-old keeper has 37 Ghana senior national team caps.

KickOff.com first broke the news of Maritzburg’s interest in Adjei early in June.
