Presbyterian Church elects new Moderator

Takoradi, Aug 12, GNA - The Presbyterian Church of Ghana on Wednesday elected Rev Prof Emmanuel Martey, 69, as its Moderator at its 10th General Assembly held in Takoradi.

A Professor of Systematic Theology and chairperson of the Ga Presbytery, Rev Prof. Martey and is married with two sons and assumes office in December for a six-year term. He polled 239 votes representing 72.6 percent of the vote to beat Rev. Dr Joseph Obiri Yeboah Mante who had 83 votes representing 25 percent in the second round of voting after he failed to gain 50 percent plus one which qualifies a candidate to emerge as the moderator.

Seven Reverend Ministers contested in the first round of voting but none had the 50 percent plus one leading to the second round. Those who contested in the first round were Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Martey who polled 164 votes, Rev. Dr. Mante had 83 votes, Rev. Prof. Caphas Narh Omenyo, came third with 72 votes and Dr Isaac Kwaku Fokuo was fourth with nine votes.

The fifth position went to Rev Nii Teiku Dagadu with seven votes, Rev. Samuel Osei Sarpong placed sixth with three votes and the seventh position went to Rev Emmanuel Tetteh Tekpetey who polled two votes.

Rev. Prof Martey thanked the voters for the honour done him and appealed for the support of the entire membership of the church for a successful tenure.
