Nafiu Iddrisu's late goal powers Kotoko to victory

victory for Kumasi Asante Kotoko in their mid-week Glo Premier League match against visiting Tudu Mighty Jets at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi. The visitors mapped out an efficient strategy of containing the slippery attackers of the Porcupine Warriors with a 4-4-2 formation which kept the attackers at bay in most part of the week six game.

There was not much by both sides and was mostly uneventful but it was the Porcupine Warriors who managed to come up with some brilliant moves upfront and came close to scoring in the 33rd and 40th minutes, however, Ahmed Toure and Daniel Nii Adjei squandered the chances that came their way.

When the second half resumed, Kotoko exhausted all their substitutions by bringing on Nathaniel Asamoah for Fatawu Mohammed, Nafiu Iddrisu replacing Mike Mensah while Afranie Yeboah substituted Ahmed Toure.

The changes brought some more bite to the Kotoko attacking machinery, however, they found it difficult to penetrate the watertight defence of Mighty Jets which revolved around Winfred Dormon, Isaac Nartey, Isaac Owusu and Inusah Musah. The visitors nearly punished Kotoko for sloppy marking in defence but a thunderbolt of a shot from Kofi Owusu in the 78th minute missed the target by inches.

As the game looked like ending in a draw, substitute Iddrisu who was lurking in the opponents’ goal area soared above the Jets’ defence to nod home a cross from Daniel Offei for the only goal of the match scored in injury time to shatter the dream of the visitors of holding their more experienced counterparts.

The goal gingered the hitherto silenced teeming supporters of Kotoko who could not help themselves but to go into wild jubilation for a face- saving goal that put their dream of topping the log on course.
