Helegbe's brace secures continental slot for Liberty

Accra, Nov 26, GNA - Nimble footed Michael Helegbe's brace in the 12th week Premier League match against troubled Power FC secured Liberty Professionals a place in the 2007 edition of the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) Inter-Clubs Competition.

A goal in each half by the skipper of the day was all that the 'Scientific Soccer' lads needed to jump to the fourth position of the table which grants them a place in the Confederation Cup competition, barring any unforeseen circumstances.

Having shown series of inconsistent performance at the Carl Reindorf Park at Dansoman in recent times, Liberty once again had to wait till the 45th minute of the first half before scoring their first goal. Helegbe who was a constant threat in the defence of Power, latched on a floated ball from the midfield and shrugged off a challenge from a Power defender before placing the ball behind keeper Akrafie Joshua to end the first half in their favour.

Both sides on resumption of the second half played with renewed strength but were unable to find the net as they messed up series of begging chances that came their way.

Liberty were the worse culprits as Yaw Antwi and Helegbe on countless occasions squandered a number of glaring scoring chances. Helegbe in the 80th minute however atoned for his misses with the second goal when he connected home a perfect pass from substitute Thua Khamix to put his personal goals scored in the 12 week old league to six.

Power FC made frantic efforts to grab at least a consolation goal but try as they did their efforts were thwarted whilst Liberty's attempt to increase the tally failed to materialize till the final whistle by referee Viviene Aggor.

Liberty's Ashmond Asamoah was adjudged the Best Player of the match.
