GGA to stage 79th Ghana Open Golf Championship

Accra, Nov. 29, GNA – The 79th Edition of the Ghana Open Golf Championship will commence on Friday, December 2 to Sunday, December 4, at the Royal Golf Club, Kumasi.

The Ghana Open Golf Championship, which has been played since 1931, is the most prestigious tournament on the Golf calendar in Ghana and has events for both professionals and amateurs as well as a special feat for Ladies.

The championship, which is under the sponsorship of Goldfields Ghana, with support from Ostec and Doscar Travel and Tours is expected to be used as platform to create awareness about the sport, as well as increase its patronage in the country.

The Juniors event is also aimed at unearthing talents to groom them for future national assignments with the core attributes of the sport, which includes; sportsmanship, honesty, integrity, respect, confidence, responsibility, perseverance, courtesy and judgment.

A statement from the Ghana Golf Association (GGA) copied to GNA Sports said the Championship is a Scratch Competition, Stroke Play with 72 holes for Professionals, 54 holes for Amateur Men and 36 holes for Amateur Ladies and 18 holes for the Juniors.

According to the statement, this year’s championship is expected to attract about 250 players from from all the 16 of Golf Clubs in the country as well as international competitors from West, East and Central Africa.

It said there will be an invitational event for executives of the Sponsors and Golf friendly Companies, which have supported the sport over the past years.

The statement said this year's championship will be graced by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II , Patron of Ghana Golf and Clement K. Humado, the Minister of Youth and Sports.
