Takoradi Open Golf Tournament ends

Takoradi, Nov. 25, GNA - George Osei of Takoradi Golf Club had 130 gross to win the men's scratch event of the 2007 Takoradi Open Golf Tournament which ended on Sunday.

Peter Korsah of Kumasi Club followed at the second position with 134 gross while Richard Coffie of Winneba Club and Hope Williams of Takoradi Club placed third and forth with 140 gross and 142 gross respectively. In the Men's Handicap, Reagan Otoo of Benso Oil Palm Plantation (BOPP) Club took away the trophy with 133 net. Lee Mensah of Takoradi Club won the second position with 138 net with George Avornyotse of Tema Club placing third place with 138 net. In the ladies handicap, Gifty Dzubey of Achimota Club won the trophy with 136 net with M. Banda of Winneba Club taking the second position also with 136 net while Sheela Upton of Takoradi club was at the third position with 141 net.

Mieshida Mensah of BOPP won the ladies scratch event with 158 gross, followed by Grace Afriyie of Tema Club with 150 gross, M.I. Oppong of Kumasi Club was third with 167 gross and Florence Etwi Barimah of Tema Club fourth with 173 gross. Abbas Mienzah and Marian Doets, both of Takoradi Club won the men's and ladies special events.

Madam Sophia Horner-Sam, Deputy Minister of Ports, Harbours and Railways, who was the Guest of Honour, thanked the Multiwall Paper Sacks West Africa Limited for their continued sponsorship of the tournament for the past 20 years as part of its social responsibility. She urged golfers to patronise the annual tournament to enable the company to continue with its sponsorship.

Madam Horner-Sam who is a golfer herself advised many more people to take up the sport as a form of exercise and relaxation. Professor George Intsiful, President of the Ghana Golf Association, advised golfers aspiring to take up executive positions at their Clubs to study the rules of the game.

He said this would ensure that the right thing was done at tournaments and enable them assist in the training of new golfers. Professor Intsiful regretted that participants at golf tournaments continue to reduce and hope the Clubs would encourage their members to improve on their performance and to participate more in the events. He commended executives of the Takoradi Sports Club for putting the golf course in good shape for the tournament.
