Ato Bissah’ omitted from local Black Stars

Glo Premier League MVP ‘Ato Bissah’ omitted from local Black Stars.

I have noted with great dismay the omission of Joseph Ato Bissah the Glo premiership’s current most valuable player (MVP) from the national under 20 and local Black Stars squad. The man who is popularly known as ‘Zola’ is a great national football asset. Ato Bissah plies his trade with Sekondi Hasaacas. As an offensive midfielder, Bissah can play on both flanks of the pitch. He has speed and great power. His goal-scoring ratio is also very impressive and can play effectively with both feet. I remember watching him score against Accra Hearts of Oak with his left from 25 yards. He is very skilful, disciplined and hard working especially in tracking opposing players. Last season he was made deputy captain in Hasaacas only after two seasons in the team and went on to captain Hasaacas for some of their matches. His technical ability and leadership qualities remain a great phenomenon for a player of his age.

Since he broke into the first team of Sekondi Hasaacas a couple of seasons ago, he has almost single-handedly kept his team in the Ghana’s premier league on two consecutive occasions. It was no surprise for me when the reputable Premier League Board (PLB) of Ghana’s premiership football conferred on him the illustrious MVP award for collecting about seven man-of –the match plaques. He is currently been courted by some of the premier league’s elites amongst others.

For these obvious reasons I am so bemused and confused that a player of his calibre has not even had an invitation to any of the national sides to at least justify his claim to fame and why he was awarded the most valuable player of the year. I thought player performance is very imperative to gaining selection into the national sides but where players perform and they don’t get a call-up that can be very discouraging. Take a look at the current English side, Aaron Lennon was played ahead of big names like David Beckham and Wright Philips because based on his current form and performance he is head and shoulders above the rest.

I think the selection process of our technical handlers need to be broadened and made transparent enough so as to be able to scout the right crop of players into our national sides. So far coach Milovan has done a great job with the Black Stars and the local Black Stars but I think with the addition of some key in-form players our national side will remain simply unbeatable.

Thank you.
