The outcome of this year’s election is both humbling and unsettling to supporters of the New Patriotic Party; not even Nostradamus could have predicted that. This, indeed, was what most people dreaded, and unfortunately, it has become a reality. To my estimation, Akufo Addo couldn’t have worked any harder than he did. His message resonated well with the masses and he was poised to win the elections, which, in my view, was his to lose. So, what the heck went wrong? In my sincerest effort to address this question, I will urge my fellow NPP warriors not to look any farther than the party itself. Ex-President Kufour, for reasons not clearly elucidated, decided it was best to leave the fate of our country in the hands of Rawlings’ NDC party. Some NPP insiders think he did this for either of these reasons: One, his favorite candidate Alan Kyeremanteng did not win the NPP primaries. Two, he (Kufour) had negotiated with NDC officials behind closed doors in a quid pro quo fashion so that he and his inner-circle wouldn’t be prosecuted for their “indiscretions” in the past 8 years. Personally, I think Kufour’s motivation for undermining the NPP party is more likely a hybrid of these points. This may be disheartening, but the unvarnished truth is that one of our own sold the entire NPP party to the serial killer and his henchmen.
It shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone that Kufour rarely campaigned—that is, if he campaigned at all-- for Nana Addo. Kufour went a step further to pull off several antics towards the end of his presidency with the express purpose of derailing Akufo Addo’s presidential bid. If not, why would he insist on purchasing a presidential jet (which he did, by the way) when he knew very well that his term was almost over? Why would he institute and present himself with an award never before bestowed on any president of Ghana? Why would he spend exorbitant amount of money on gold medals to award some citizens of Ghana when some don’t even have good source of drinking water? Why would he publicly call Ghanaians lazy when, truthfully, there were (are) not sufficient employment opportunities to lift them out of their mire? All these were strategically done in an election year so as to turn the electorate against the NPP.
Further, as I alluded to earlier, there is credible information out there to the effect that Kufour had discrete meetings with officials of the NDC party to discuss the terms of handing over power to them. It is a fact that this “arrangement” took place, but what is worth debating is when it took place. Some sources argue the meeting took place before the first round of elections; others say it took place before the run-off. Whichever timeline you believe, please consider the following: Prior to the first round of the presidential elections, Kufour’s name was on Rawlings’ lips whenever he attacked the NPP. How often did we hear Rawlings personally attacking Kufour during the campaign leading to the run-off? Folks, take some time to ponder this question. What’s more, Mills was so certain he would win that he assembled his transition team even before the run-off. In an article culled from VOA and published on Ghanaweb the author wrote, “President-Elect Atta –Mills has already indicated that before even the run-off, his transitional team is ready and is in motion” (Ghanaians Disapprove of Outgoing Transition Team, 01/06/2009). How could Mills be so certain that he would win the run-off, considering that Nana Addo won the first round with over 100,000 votes? Of course, with Kufour on his side, Mills Rawlings had every reason to believe that the presidency had been given to him on a silver platter.
It is quite ironic that this same Kufour who campaigned on the promise of ridding Mother Ghana of evils perpetrated against her by the NDC, was somehow encouraged to leave the affairs of our country in the hands of these murderers. To make matters worse, he has even given the NDC the carte blanche to extend the presidential term to 5 years. It is sad, folks, but the man with whom we entrusted our country for the past 8 years, is telling us we will better served by the NDC for 5-year terms. Mind you, this was not the only gift that Kufour presented to the NDC, in addition to others stated above. It is now official that Kufour, whose administration used tax-payers money to prosecute and convict Tsatsu Tsikata and several others of crime and sentenced them, commuted their sentence before he left office. I sense a quid pro quo written all over this final act by the chief betrayer. Only fools will think Kufour did this for naught. Kufour is a disgrace, not only to the NPP, but to all stewards of democracy. I can almost sense the founding fathers of the NPP tossing and turning in their graves, wondering how one of theirs could sellout the entire party to a murderer.
Regardless of how much I write, one fact remains indisputable: Mills is the President of Ghana. It is frightening though, leaving the fate of our country in the hands of a learned professor whose brain is tethered to a serial killer. Truly, he can be president of all if he helps to ameliorate crime and unemployment; provide new infrastructures; improve the image of Ghana abroad; continue some of the NPP policies that have benefited the country e.g., National Health Insurance, School Feeding Programs etc. If the aforementioned polices are implemented and are successful, they will serve us all well. After all, I am a Ghanaian, first, and an Ashanti, second, so why shouldn’t I be happy if the country fares better under the new administration? Who wouldn’t be happy if Nana Amma Obenewaa is able to get the sex change that (s)he desperately needs if the National Health Insurance is upgraded to provide cosmetic surgery? Wouldn’t this give us all a respite from his/her embarrassing and incessant defense of that serial killer? (PS: Will someone convey to that loudmouthed cross-dressing faggot to stop posting comments and publishing articles under Akan names? Hiding behind Akan names will not help his/her inferiority complex)
How will Mills rule our country? Well, precisely because of his sui generis status, the only way to ascertain this is to take a hard look at how his chaperone ruled the country. Did you realize that Mills’ transition team make-up was largely from Rawlings’ previous administration? Did you recognize a bunch of Ewe names? I hope Mills doesn’t make akple and cat soup our national diet. To put it mildly, Mills and the entire electorate will be subsumed under Rawlings’ leadership. Feeling nostalgic already? Hey, don’t blame me! After all, when the NDC won the majority in parliament it was Rawlings, not Mills, who was running around telling people, “I am back.” Can Mills even make it past his first term with this certified murderer breathing down his neck? I hope Rawlings doesn’t invoke his trokosi gods to send this poor man to his grave prematurely. Less than a week into Mills Rawlings’ presidency, the remnants of Rawlings paramilitary apparatus is giving the nation a treat of what’s to come, as evidenced by Victor Smith’s military-style operation at the castle on 01/09/09. Clearly, we have Mills and his doppelganger Rawlings ruling our country. That’s a twofer that some Ghanaians were willing to settle for. ENJOY.
