Complainant is my concubine and not mother - Accused tells court

Mamponteng (Ash), July 9, GNA - A teacher standing trial for assault and threat of death on Thursday stunned the Mamponteng magistrate court, when he revealed that the complainant was his concubine and not mother as she claimed.

Otuo Ampratwum, 25, told the court during cross-examination that he had been living with Nana Fati, 42, as his concubine for the past two years and even impregnated her last year.

The claim of Ampratwum, however, resulted in a heated argument between the two with the complainant maintaining stoutly that the accused was her adopted son.

It took a threat from the court to charge the two for contempt to bring some sanity into the proceedings.

Ampratwum, who pleaded guilty to the charge of assault and not guilty to threat of death, is on a two-million-cedi bail and will re-appear on July 21.

Prosecuting, Police Assistant Superintendent (ASP) Frank K. Mensah told the court that the accused, is a teacher in the Kwabre District of Ashanti, and lives at Sarfo with the complainant.

He said two months ago, he picked a quarrel with the complainant for allegedly giving his soup to one Yeboah, whom he suspected to be having an affair with the complainant.

ASP Mensah said in the process, Ampratwum allegedly hit the complainant's face with a belt, injuring her and also threatened to take out Yeboah's intestines.

Sensing danger, he said, the complainant fled and reported to the police, who had a hectic time arresting the accused, who wielded broken bottles with which he threatened to kill two police personnel.
