NEWS-ONE has picked some rather interesting information on this year’s edition of the annual Ghana Movie Awards.
The paper’s insiders from the organisers have hinted that unlike past editions where a jury is set to decide which actor or director wins which award, what would happen this year is that the winners would be arrived at through a special voting system supervised by Deloitte & Touche, a multinational auditing firm of enviable repute.
“What would happen is that the actors would vote among themselves to decide who is the best actor, the actresses would do same to decide who should be the best actresses, movie directors would also vote among themselves for their category, film editors would do same for their category and this is how winners for the various is categories would be selected. It is only the overall best winner that would be selected through a jury,” the source stated.
The person explained further that there would be a special voting sheet given to the various stakeholders and that after voting, the poll sheets would be forwarded to Deloitte & Touche for compilation and collation.
Also, unlike all past editions where the event had been held on Christmas nights, this year’s event will be held on Monday December 30 at the Accra International Conference Centre. Reason for the change of date is yet to be explained, though speculations say the venue had already been booked by another event organiser for the December 25 date.
The overall winner still walks home with a car anyway as well as a trip to the Cannes Film Festival in France.
What is, however, raising eyebrows is the decision on who would host, or as it is said ‘MC’ the event this year.
“There has been a lot of shouting and yelling because the big guys have been divided between going for a Ghanaian and a Nigerian to MC the event,” the source stated.
NEWS-ONE has also gathered that the names of Nigerian stand0up comedians that have come up as possible hosts include Basket Mouth, Klint Da Drunk, Gordons, Mr Versatile, O. Bakase and Emeka Smith.
Funny Face, K.O.D, KKD, Kwame Sefa Kayi, George ‘Aboagye’ Quaye and KSM have also been tabled as very good potential hosts.
The tango on whether to go for a Ghanaian or a Nigerian is, however, unsettled, according to our insiders.
Despite the annual controversies, the Ghana Movie Awards still remain the movie industry’s only award worth writing home about.
It seems to be picking up year after year, though there is still room for improvement. Indeed, in the absence of the Ghana Movie Awards, the country cannot even boast of a ‘starting point’ towards the Oscars or other international awards.
