Ghana’s Biggest Street Dance Show Begins

As the fifth year of the Malta Guinness Street Dance (MGSD) championships kick off in Ghana, we take a look at how this competition has given a new spark of life to the dance. It can be argued that the MGSD competition is one of the biggest dance competitions in Ghana and it is a creative art form that is gaining more and more attention.

Organized by Malta Guinness, Ghana’s iconic and vibrant malt drink, the aim is to provide a platform for the energetic and talented to showcase their exciting dance skills. MGSD is passionate about championing the talent our country has to offer and providing that talent with once-in-a-lifetime opportunities.

In true Malta Guinness style, the competition selects the best dancers across our nation and takes them through a series of training sessions to assist them in crafting their talent to ultimately build a successful career in dance.

Over the past five years, MGSD has fuelled this rise of the nation’s dance talent to such an extent that this year’s winning crew will bypass the Pan-African stage of the competition and will go direct to an international stage where they will compete against crews from across the globe.

This season was kicked off with a glamorous launch event at the Alisa Hotel in Accra and was followed by neighbourhood searches held in Kumasi, Takoradi and Accra. Visiting specific locations, dance crews such as Heroes, Bradez Dancerz, Cash Liners, Lil Flippers, Cue Crew and many more all showcased their hottest moves at the main auditions at CNC Apatakese, Kumasi.

In Takoradi, groups such as Street Preachers, Cash Money, Underground Swaggerz amongst others, auditioned at the Shippers Council Hall with the dream to become dance superstars. The main auditions climaxed in Accra at the ever popular Aviation Social Centre and in Tema at the Ghacem Club House, Community 5. Crews such as Ex-Brain, 2 Black 2 Strong, Humble Stars, No Limit, Rockers of All Time, brought together their dance routines in a bid to be selected for the next round.

All of the lucky crews from the Audition Rounds are now invited back to two Zonal Events happening in Kumasi on 3rd August at CNC Apatakese and Accra on 10th August at Aviation Social Center. Here, the most talented dance crews will thrill audiences with their skills in a bid to be selected to move on to the next stage of the competition.

Ten crews from these Zonal Events will make it to the Elimination Round which will be broadcast on TV screens across Ghana. The whole nation will be able to watch these crews battle it out in a series of dance tasks as they see who can lock, pop and crump their way in to the hearts of the public, as the public this year have the opportunity to vote for their favourite crews.

The overall winning crew will be chosen by MGSD judges in September at the National Final, and then they will have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to represent Ghana on an international stage. The winners will not only win the chance to fly Ghana’s flag at an international level but will also walk away with a cash prize of GH?15,000.

Don’t forget to join us to see who will make it through the Zonal Events taking place in Kumasi on 3rd August at CNC Apatakese and in Accra on 10th August at Aviation Social Center. Come and support the nation’s most talented streetdance crews in the next stage of the competition!
