Notify EC of travels outside the country - Arhin

Accra, March 13, GNA - Ghanaians who would be travelling outside the country during the voter registration exercise from March 16 to March 29 have been asked to notify the Electoral Commission (EC) to ensure that they are registered on their return.

Mr Albert Kofi Arhin, EC Director of Elections, who made the call in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Accra on Friday requested all potential travellers to officially furnish the Commission with all relevant travelling documents.

The document includes photocopies of passport, visas and an application letter to the EC.

He gave the assurance that there were enough forms to register all citizens: "We have enough forms at the regional and district offices to meet the demand of the exercise".

Mr Arhin noted that next December's vote was very crucial in the history of the country. For that matter, all those are 18 years and above should participate in the exercise otherwise one stood a risk of not being able to vote on December 7 and in any other election or referendum in the future.

The fresh registration exercise, which takes off from March 16 to March 29 would lead to the replacement of the current register that is believed to be bloated because it has 10.5 million voters out of a total population of less than 20 million.

Mr Arhin said: "We must all pretend as if we have never registered our names before and must join in this major programme to once and for all, have a very reliable and credible voters' register".
